Raw Preparation!

When consuming a placenta raw most moms put chunks of the cleaned and cut placenta into smoothies.

Some moms like to have the chunks frozen in a little juice to make it seem a little more palatable! Once the chunks are blended into the smoothie moms report no taste!

Postpartum Benefits of Placenta Consumption!!

I have worked with many new moms during their pregnancy, birth and postpartum times. All new moms experience similar things immediately after birth. These things include fatigue from a long birth or a baby that won't sleep without being held, and of course the six weeks of inconvenient postpartum bleeding. Shifting hormones can result in a few days of baby blues, mood swings and a for many women, postpartum depression, which can last much longer. Do to a variety of reasons, such as premature baby, traumatic birth, formula supplementation, blood lose or cesarean birth many women struggle to build an abundant milk supply. For women who have experienced these things after the birth of their child many would say that the next time around if someone offered them a supplement that could help reduce or even eliminate their chances of experiencing a stressful postpartum period they would take it!

Well consuming your placenta is the answer!! Now, I know a few of you just puked in your mouth a little bit at the thought, but there are a wide variety of ways to consume it. The most common way here in the United States is placenta encapsulation.  Most women can handle the idea of swallowing a pill that has no look or taste of their recently expelled placenta. Other ways would be to cook it up in a stew, lasagna or even placenta chili! Some moms have there placentas made into a homeopathic remedy or tincture. Finally, there is raw consumption in the form of frozen placenta "pills" or blended into a smoothie.

Placenta consumption "also known as placentophagy" helps reduce your risk of postpartum depression, brings your milk in faster and in abundance. Other benefits include a speedy recovery and shortens your postpartum bleeding by helping your uterus return to its pre-pregnancy state faster. Now your saying to yourself; "how does a placenta do all that." The way it does is by providing the body with a supplement of all your own hormones. Placentas contain many amazing properties. Below is the list of hormones readily found in your amazing placenta. So now, take this information, do more research and make a decision that is best for you. But remember, you do have a way to help have an easier and more relaxed postpartum recovery!!!

Prolactin- promotes let down and helps you do the same things over and over without feeling like you are doing the same things over and over

Oxytocin- helps relieve pain, enhances bonding, helps uterus contract to non-pregnant state, the 'love' hormone

TSH-(thyroid stimulating hormone) boosts energy and helps in recovering from stressful events

Interferon-stimulates the immune system, protects against infection

Prostaglandins-stimulates involution of the uterus post birth and acts as an anti-inflammatory

Hemoglobin-replenishes iron, which restores energy and helps prevent anemia, a common postpartum condition

Urokinase-reduces bleeding and enhances wound healing

Gamma globulin- immune booster to help prevent postpartum infections

CRT (Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone) reduces stress
